Stocks End October with Heavy Losses as Tech Stocks Tumble

The stock market plunged on Friday, led by technology stocks. Investors are worried that huge investments in AI may not generate enough profits.

Overall, S&P 500 fell 1.8% to 7,580, while Nasdaq dropped 2.9% to 25,437. These were their largest recorded declines since June.

Chart of the Day

Here is the one-year chart of Cintas Corporation (CTAS) as of October 5, 2026, when the stock was at $195.

Cintas (CTAS) continues to churn out consistent growth. Last quarter, the uniform and rug cleaning company delivered profit growth of 16% on the back of 11% revenue growth. That was the 4th consecutive quarter of double-digit profit growth.

Management stated that overall growth was being driven mainly by volume, with new customers, better retention and increased cross-selling all contributing to stronger momentum. First Aid & Safety and Fire Protection also continued to grow strongly, as Cintas expanded its range of workplace services.

David Sharek, Founder of School of Hard Stocks, considers CTAS to be a safe stock with the ability to grow profits — and perhaps the stock — at a low double-digit rate. With 13% profit growth expected next quarter, the Cintas train looks to keep chugging right along.

CTAS is part of the Conservative Growth Portfolio. He considers CTAS a buy-and-hold stock.
