Sharek’s Take
David SharekI’m not high on CTRP right now. Earnings estimates came down for 2011 and 2012 and that leaves expected growth at 18% and 26% for the next two years. This company should be growing at 40%.

CTRP is a lot cheaper than it has been — the P/E’s gone from 51 to 37 and 30 during the last three quarters — but growth is expected to slow now. The Chinese travel industry is growing rapidly, I’m surprises CTRP is having issues. The Shanghai World Expo ran from May-Oct of 2010, so comparisons are tough this year. Meanwhile I just purchased Travelzoo (TZOO), which I think has better prospects for 2011, so I might sell CTRP shortly.
One-Year Chart
In Ctrip’s one-year chart profit growth the past four quarters looks great (bottom/left) but Estimates show growth slowing to 16% and then 22%. Ctrip beat last quarter so it could beat again. In the long-term view of things, the P/E of 30 is about as cheap as CTRP gets. Note the espected Long Term Growth Rate is 27%, that’s really good.
Profit Growth
Profits grew 55% last quarter and revenues jumped 44%. Revenue is expected to grow 29% next quarter.

CTRP beat by 5 cents last quarter but I can’t tell if that will continue with the World Expo done. Quarterly estimates just decreased so CTRP might not beat again next quarter.Annual Profit Estimates were reduced slightly. Maybe I’m being hard on CTRP. Then again maybe estimates should rise with the travel indutry doing well. The next four quarters look mixed. I would preffer fugures in a closer range.
Fair Value
I’m taking my Fair Value P/E of CTRP down from 45 to 35. Comparisons are tough to match and this stock doesn’t have any momentum. Fair Value to 2012 is solid but I don’t know if we want to wait that long — and these estimates could fall some more.
Ten-Year Chart
I first purchased CTRP on 12/1/04 at $7, then I sold 9/18/08 at $20 and bought the stock again on 12/28/09 and paid $37. No withe the stock $38 I am leaning towards selling again. The thing that keeps me in this stock is the upward slant of the ten-year chart and the fact profits have grown every year at a solid rate overall.
Power Ranking Bottom Line
Growth Portfolio

22 of 22

Right now CTRP is the 22th best stock in the 22 strock Growth Portfolio Power Rankings. I almost sold the stock to make room for Travelzoo but I’ve always liked CTRP as a buy-and-hold stock that could compound at a solid rate over time. I’m on the fence about selling this stock

I recently sold CTRP from the Aggressive Growth Portfolio.
