Stocks Climb on Tech Gains to End Volatile Week

The stock market gained on Friday, supported by a recovery in technology and AI-related shares, reduced tensions surrounding Iran, and stronger investor confidence. However, rising Treasury yields and ongoing inflation concerns continued to create uncertainty in the market outlook.

Overall, S&P 500 and Nasdaq grew 0.6% to 7,812 and 27,366, respectively.

Chart of the Day

Here is the one-year chart of MercadoLibre (MELI) as of September 15, 2026, when the stock was at $1829.

MercadoLibre is growing revenues quickly, but the stock has struggled as the company continues to spend on growth. Last quarter, the company’s profits declined 11% even though revenue grew 50% year-over-year.

Management has been deliberately putting money back into the business, including lower free-shipping costs in Brazil, expanding its credit-card business and growing its payments network. Because of these investments, the 2026 annual profit estimate fell from $61.36 to $38.67 during the past four quarters.

Last quarter, Operating Margin (Income from Operations Margin) was 6.7%, down from 12.2% a year ago. Margin compression was due to lower prices in Brazil, higher shipping costs, and investments in user acquisition.

The company lowered take rates, had increases in cost of devices due to higher costs of chips in the industry, and is experiencing cost increases in logistics due to higher energy costs. MercadoLibre is also fighting for market share with Amazon (AMZN) and Sea’s (SE) Shopee.
